November Task List
for
Dependable Gardens

There are a number of tasks that will still get you outside and into your garden this month.

If you haven’t already done so, plant your tulips, daffodils, and other spring bulbs before the ground freezes. Remember to add a bit of bone meal to each planting hole before adding the bulbs.

Make sure that the canes of your climbing roses and other vining plants are securely fastened to their supports to protect them from damaging winter winds. Use horticultural stretch tape instead of wire or twine to prevent cutting into the stems.

Prune second year fruiting cane fruits such as blackberries and raspberries. Remove all canes that produced fruit leaving only the current year’s new canes.

Finish mulching planting beds for winter. Organic mulches mimic natural forest litter and protect plants through the cold winter months. As the mulch slowly breaks down it provides nutrients to the soil and improves soil quality.

Yes, it is still a good time to plant trees and shrubs and lay sod. Water them in well and maintain good soil moisture until our winter rain and snow begins.

As soon as trees have dropped their leaves apply a dormant oil spray; this will help control over-wintering insects and their eggs.

Split and stack your firewood and kindling and stock up on marshmallows and hot chocolate mix. Check older firewood for insect infestation and do not store inside or next to the house. Have your chimney cleaned.

Clean out the debris from your rain gutters and downspouts to prevent water and ice damage to your roof.

Move any terracotta pots that you may have inside to prevent freezing and cracking.

Before storing your lawn mower for the winter, use it one last time to mulch the leaves on your lawn—don’t just rake it up and throw it away, it is free fertilizer. Winterize your mower afterwards, according to your owner’s manual.

Christmas trees will be arriving by the end of the month. DG will have Grand, Noble, and Balsam firs in a range of sizes along with wreaths, swags, garlands, and live trees.
