May Task List
for
Dependable Gardens

April showers do bring May flowers. We are well stocked with annuals, perennials, and ornamental grasses and more are arriving every week. Have a special request? Let us know. We'll do our best to locate it.

This year we have a greater selection of trees and shrubs. Our two on-staff certified arborists can help answer any of your tree questions or help you find that perfect tree or shrub to fit your needs.

Mid-May is the time to apply your spring fertilizer and grub control to keep your lawn green and healthy.

Insects and diseases are starting to appear with the warmer weather. Bring in a sample and talk with our certified plant diagnosticians for treatment recommendations.

Last frost-free date is typically May 15th. Begin hardening off warm season plants that have been started indoors before planting in the garden. To harden off begin by moving plants out into a sheltered shady area for a few hours during the day. Gradually increase the sunlight and length of time outdoors until plants can tolerate 24 hours outdoors without wilting or showing signs of distress (process may take 1-2 weeks depending on weather conditions.)

Other tasks that can be done in May: Deadhead spring blooming bulbs, but let the foliage grow until it yellows. Deadhead and begin replacing pansies and primroses as the blossoms fade. Divide crowded perennials and share with friends. Stake tall growing perennials.

Repot houseplants and treat to a cool shower to wash the dust off the leaves. Prune spring blooming shrubs (if finished blooming) before they set next year's buds (i.e. forsythia, viburnum.) Plant summer blooming bulbs (late May). Turn your compost pile. Clean bird feeders with a weak bleach solution and scrub brush - rinse well and allow to dry completely before re-hanging. Fill and hang hummingbird feeders.

Don't forget Mother's Day is May 14th. Treat mom to a beautiful hanging basket, unique potted container, a flowering tree, a fountain, or her favorite rose bush. We have many gift items to choose from. Can't decide? Give mom a DG gift Certificate available in any denomination.
