March Task List
for Dependable Gardens SPRING OFFICIALLY ARRIVES MARCH 20TH. ARE YOU READY?
It’s a crazy time at the nursery. New plants and products are arriving daily as the nursery gets stocked up for another great year. We may be busy but customers are always our first priority. We are always happy to help you with any questions you may have.  Begin/finish cleaning flower/vegetable beds of winter debris. If the soil is not too wet, prepare your garden area by tilling in organic matter or compost. DG carries several types of compost including Merrill’s poultry compost. Delivery can be arranged with a 3 yard minimum. For more information about poultry compost visit www.poultrycompost.com.
Need some early color? We have a great selection of primroses and pansies available. Your compost pile (like mine) has probably been neglected all winter. Pick a sunny day and turn it over, adding in any disease & seed free debris cleaned from the garden. Plant potatoes and early spring vegetables such as spinach, chard, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, and peas.  Continue pruning. Remove any winterkilled branches on trees and shrubs, cut back fruit trees to desired production height, and trim ornamental grasses to 6 inches. Wait to prune roses and butterfly bushes until after the forsythia blooms. If you have any questions just ask our staff certified arborists.
 Mid-March is the time to apply a pre-emergent for weed control and a quick release fertilizer for greening the lawn. DG Nursery & Turf recommends an easy 1-step application of Ferti•lome Lawn Food with Barricade. A 20lb bag covers 5,000 sq. ft.
Late March is the time to start most of your vegetable seeds indoors for planting outdoors in early May. We carry seed starting supplies including peat pellets and pots and germination stations as well as a selection of seeds specifically for this area. The annual Boise Flower and Garden show will be held March 23rd-25th to tempt you with new products and ideas. For more information see their website at www.gardenshowboise.com. |
