February Task List
for Dependable Gardens ![]() Getting antsy and bored? Just because it's still cold outside doesn't mean you can't start planning for spring. Here are some things you can do: Order or purchase your seeds now for the best selection — don't hesitate to try something new in vegetables or flowers. Sketch out your vegetable garden and decide what new colors and varieties you may want to add to your flowerbeds. Check your gardening tools. Clean off any rust that may have accumulated over the winter and touch up the edges if they need sharpening.
Spray dormant oil on your ornamental deciduous trees and fruit trees to smother insect eggs. Also apply a lime-sulfur spray on fruit trees before bud-break for fungal disease prevention. Mid- to late-February is the time to begin your spring pruning, removing dead twigs and branches, crossing branches, or any sprouts growing near the base of the trunk or on the branches. Remember not to prune your spring-flowering plants such as lilac or forsythia until after they flower.
If you forgot or only did a so-so job cleaning up your flower and garden beds last fall, pick a sunny day and finish. Remove all dead plant material and cut back ornamental grasses to 6 inches. Don't remove any mulch — it could still turn cold and your plants need that protection.
In some areas of our valley, hungry deer can be a problem and our trees and shrubs offer a tempting invitation. Come see us for landscape protection tips. Want an early touch of spring? Just place freshly cut branches of early blooming plants such as forsythia, lilac, cherry, and plum in water and display in a sunny location. |
